Abstract

The current research aims to determine the degree of mastery of second-year intermediate students in mathematics skills on the TIMSS test. To achieve the research objective, the null hypothesis was formulated, which states that there is no statistically significant difference between the average scores of students on the TIMSS skills test with respect to the gender variable. The researcher used the descriptive approach by preparing a test for mathematics skills. The test was administered to a group of students who were considered the primary sample of the research, numbering (200) male and female students from the second-year intermediate students senrolled in schools under the Diyala directorate of Education. The test consisted of (12) questions comprising multiple-choice and short – answer items related to the mathematics book for the second-year intermediate. The results for the first objective showed low students' performance in the domaions of (knowledge, application, and reasoning). This is attributed to the weakness of basic mathematics skills and their reliance on memorization and indoctrination. As for the results for the second objective, female students outperformed male students in the TIMSS skills test. In light of these results, the researcher recommends enriching mathematics textbooks with questions and activities that incorporate higher-order thinking and simulate tests (TIMSS ), and offers several pedagogical recommendations .
